At Adult & Pediatric Urology, LLC, we care for many specific issues that other physicians do not cover or have a staff skilled enough to handle. One of these specific issues is Prostatitis. Prostatitis is swelling and inflammation of the prostate gland, a walnut-sized gland situated directly below the bladder in men. The prostate gland produces fluid (semen) that nourishes and transports sperm.
Prostatitis often causes painful or difficult urination. Other symptoms include pain in the groin, pelvic area or genitals and sometimes flu-like symptoms. If you have difficulty urinating, frequent urges to urinate, pain or discomfort in the penis or testicles, or experience painful ejaculating, you should call your doctor immediately. It can come on suddenly and while it can affect men of any age, it tends to be more common in younger men.
To test for it, there may be blood work or urine tests performed. Based on the results, there are many varying forms and causes for Prostatitis.
Often times, the cause is not identified, but it can often be caused by a bacterial infection. If that is the case, it can be treated with antibiotics, and while some cases improve quickly on their own or with treatment, some types last for many months or could become a more chronic, recurring issue.
